Cultivating the Mind of Awakening
A retreat based on contemplative science with
Jakob Leschly and Gonzalo Brito.
4 days/3 nights
Sierra Espuña, Murcia
July 25-28, 2022
“One important benefit of practicing is the skill you gain of being able to observe your thoughts without being drawn into them. Like a detached onlooker watching a spectacle, you will learn how to see your thoughts for what they are, namely constructs of the mind. So many of our problems arise because, in our naive untrained state, we confuse our thoughts with actual reality. “
- his holiness the Dalai Lama
Description
Bodhichitta lies at the very core of Mahayana Buddhism and is the motivation to awaken our innate potential for the benefit of all beings. The cultivation of bodhichitta is founded on training in the qualities of our mind and our heart by practicing what is commonly known as the four immesurables to open the heart: love, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity.
Training in the qualities of bodhichitta means to cultivate our wisdom mind in order to support us in overcoming habitual patterns and suffering, and to perceive reality in its fundamental richness and openness.
Bodhichitta qualities, which can be referred to as the cultivation of wisdom and compassion, are universally shared by all human beings, no matter what their traditions and cultures. As such, they resonate with and are innately present in all wisdom traditions worldwide.
In this four days / three nights retreat, addressed to anyone interested in the cultivation of the qualities of wisdom and compassion, we will focus on teachings and meditative practices oriented to the cultivation of bodhichitta. We will start by deepening our understanding of and training in calm abiding (shamatha and mindfulness), followed by the presentation and practice of what is referred to as the four limitless qualities, which leads us towards a more profound reflection and understanding of our innate wisdom qualities.
Why a retreat?
In order to develop our spirituality, our wisdom, our ability to concentrate and the qualities of the heart, we need space and time. Our early 21st century lives are usually dominated by the mentality of doing, running, achieving, accomplishing... even in our leisure and vacation spaces. We usually oscillate between constant agitation or exhaustion. In the context of a retreat we find an appropriate space for the practice of being present by cultivating a clear, energetic, and relaxed attitude. As human beings, we have great potential for development, being able to cultivate immense wisdom and compassion that lies in seed form at our core. Retreats allow us to connect with this fundamental seed and consciously water it.
Facilitators
This retreat will be facilitaed by two guides with complementary viewpoints and experiences: a translator and teacher of meditation in the Tibetan tradition who has dedicated more than 45 years to the study, practice and teaching of the Dharma (Jakob Leschly), and a psychologist dedicated for twenty years to the integration of contemplative practices and mental health, with specific emphasis on the psychology and training of compassion for more than the last ten years (Gonzalo Brito).
In this context, we shall focus on all presented topics and practices from both a perspective of Buddhism and western psychology. Jakob as well as Gonzalo delight in engaging in straightforward, simple language, emphasizing practical application of the teachings.
Who might benefit from this retreat
Participating in this retreat does not require previous meditation practice. However, it does require a keen interest and openness towards dedicating 3-4 days to practicing meditation - mostly in a context of silence - and taking part in guided meditations and related exercises focusing on compassion and mindfulness.
Practice in silence - surrounded by stunning nature of Sierra Espuña, Murcia
The retreat is scheduled to take place on the beautiful premises of Hospedería Bajo el Cejo, in the idylic village of El Berro, located in the midst of Nature Park Sierra Espuña.
In this retreat, we will be practicing primarily in silence, limiting our conscious speech and attentive listening to the teachings, and space towards the end of individual sessions for Q/A. In this way, we aim at making use of this precious opportunity to deepen our practice in safe surroundings and pristine nature, conductive to contemplation, pausing, and meaningful learning. This framework will be interspersed on Wednesday evening with a music recital by the renowned Murcian guitar maestro Juan José Robles (honored for his album In-quietud as best European folk album 2019), who has kindly agreed to accept our invitation for a noble moment of celebration in this first ever retreat-seminar organized at El Berro.
